The program combines face-to-face classes, hands-on skills, and nurse educator rounding to provide the new graduate nurse with the education and support needed during the first year of practice. Through strategic coaching, active learning, and professional reflection, nurse residents develop the necessary skills to transition from novice to competent nurse clinicians.
Program Goals Retain and develop new graduate nurses. Empower new graduate nurses with skills necessary to provide high-quality, safe patient care. Provide a structured residency experience for new graduate nurses, in conjunction with unit-based orientation, gradually leading to full productivity and enhanced patient outcomes.
Program Objectives Provide evidence-based curriculum including educational topics relevant to the transition needs of the novice nurse at specific time intervals during the first year of practice.
Foster socialization through cohort experience and professional collaboration with peers. Equip preceptors with knowledge and resources to facilitate new nurse transition to the professional nursing role.
Facilitate development of clinical reasoning skills through the use of adult learning methods including simulation, case studies, group discussion, reflection, and active learning strategies.
Ensure ongoing progress checks through nurse educator rounding to provide residents with continuous feedback, coaching, and reinforcement, leading to increased competence and confidence with decision-making. Collaborate with nurse managers, unit educators, and preceptors to support the social and professional transition of the new graduate nurse.The Primary Care Obstetrics Fellowship is a month post-residency program that provides specialty training in the areas of operative obstetrics, high risk maternity care, and neonatal stabilization, combined with continued Family Medicine exposure.
